St. Bernard Parish laid out a long-term vision for their transportation network, including sidewalks and pedestrian crossing improvements, trails, and on-street bicycle facilities in this project led by Soll Planning. The plan included a data-driven prioritization scheme to identify near-term projects, sidewalk inventory, complete streets elements, and community input through several public meetings and local advisory council.
The plan was adopted by the Parish Council in June 2017 and is actively being implemented.
“You’re Not Alone On the Road – Create Safe Streets for Everyone,” encourages a shared responsibility for the safety of people walking, biking and driving in the New Orleans area. The project included extensive demographic and crash data analysis to steer messaging and target locations where the campaign would be most effective. Soll Planning led the community engagement portion of the project, reaching residents, workers, and visitors to New Orleans to teach them the rules of the road and provide bicycle safety equipment.
Soll Planning has co-led Complete Streets Workshops in Hammond, Pontchatoula, St. John the Baptist and St. Bernard Parishes. These workshops teach community leaders the fundamentals of Complete Streets – what they are, what the benefits are, and how to get them. Policy Development Workshops assist communities with the creation of their own tailored Complete Streets Policy Ordinance ready for adoption.
